CLASS LEVELS

Here's a breakdown of the different levels of classes we offer.

BEGINNER LEVEL - No Student Left Behind
In a nutshell, absolutely EVERYONE is welcome to come to the beginner's class regardless of experience or ability. In these "no student left behind" classes, the instructor will teach to the level of the newest or least experienced dancers and offer one-on-one technique to the higher level dancers in the class. Swing dance basics are taught, drilled, repeated, and practiced often to develop muscle memory. This is not to say that the topics in class will always be the same. There is a lot to learn at this level before moving on, including the basic steps in Balboa, West Coast Swing, and Shag. Students will be expected to perform a routine containing several basic steps in East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop, and Charleston before continuing on to the intermediate level class. Here's the routine:
East Coast Swing Basic / Sendout / Swingout / Walkthrough / 1/2 Circle
Swingout with Outside Turn / Swingout with Inside Turn / Lindy Circle / Charleston Basic

INTERMEDIATE LEVEL - Taught to the mean level of the class participants
In this level, dancers can do okay out on the social dance floor. More emphasis is placed on rhythm and timing, centered movement, dance connection, and lead-and-follow techniques. The number of patterns taught explodes into the hundreds and new rhythms, variations, and styles are introduced. This is the most important level to attend to become a well-rounded social swing dancer. There's lots more technique to master in this level - Ask your instructor before coming to the advanced class.

ADVANCED LEVEL- Taught to the level of the most advanced students in class!
These dancers are pretty darn good. Advanced classes are taught to the level of the best dancers in class and in-class repetition gives way to an expectation for students to commit new concepts to muscle memory outside of class. At the advanced level we teach students to dance at higher tempos, make heavy use of musicality and alternate rhythms, and innovate in regards to patterns and styles. Advanced level dancers are often dance team members so routines and sometimes even drops or aerials may be a class topic!

HOW WILL I KNOW WHICH LEVEL CLASS TO ATTEND?
To get started, it's always good idea to come to a beginning level class first, just to feel it out. Ask your instructor for a written copy of the "Beginner's Routine". If you feel that you're pretty good at all of the moves in the routine, let your instructor know and he or she will "audition" you for the next level. If there are steps in the routine that you are not familiar with or need a bit more practice on, let your instructor know before the next class that you attend. They'll be sure to make them part of the class for you! If you're really serious about advancing through the levels quickly, speak to your instructor or give us a call to sign yourself up for a private lesson.
